Thanks for the responses! A nice difference between the 339 from the 321 is that it's so light and easy to wear.

I had my name down for one of these but changed my mind after the discolouration issues. I was also told by an acquaintance who has one the seconds hand doesn't 'reset' when the crown is pulled, nor does the movement 'hack', which if correct would have irritated me very much. It may be more historically accurate like that, assuming it actually is but for over 9000GBP i would not have been happy.

That said, it's a great looker 8-) enjoy.

I had my reservations as well and hesitated, especially regarding the case fading issues. But, to date, the AD where I purchased the watch, has sold quite a few of the 339 and at least in that regard, has not encountered any issues. Oddly, most of the fading reports have occurred to 339's distributed in Asia.

The production number for my 339 is well past those that have experienced fading. Assuming that Panerai chronologically numbers its production, I have my fingers crossed that the fading issue has already been resolved; however, only time can tell.

While it is unfortunate that some of the 339s have shown fading, I think overall, it adds to the mystique of the watch because it certainly layers another story to its release. Further, the pictures can't do the watch justice, it truly is a very handsome timepiece. At the AD, I could not locate any other watch from any other maker that had a similar aesthetic.

Now, I'm on the market for some new straps. Any suggestions? I"m thinking horned antiqued-grey or antiqued off-white alligator. Are there any strap makers in the US comparable in quality and skill to ABP?

Thankfully we all like different things but i see the 339 as belonging only on leather or better, vintage leather and alligators would imo look wrong, but entirely your choice of course. Being in the UK i know of several US strap makers but none specifically working in reptile skins. Maybe that is a clue to popularity ;)

Good point, however the OEM assolumente, or whatever it's called, already fits the bill and has a great vintage/antiqued feel.

I want another aesthetic option. A reptilian strap would serve a good contrast to the stock military look. Admittedly the watch presents itself almost entirely as a military watch, I've seen very successful alligator strap combinations. The lack of US strap makers having a large range of alligator finishes disappoints me or maybe I'm not looking at the right makers.

Not US based but Simona Straps offer some nice alligator items, check out the forum links for strap makers 8-)

What would look good is an OEM Gold Gator or the Gold Nubuck 'JV' Gator :P
