Some very quick pics and therefore not good ones. The Tritium markers are still 'clean & bright' and therefore they still match the hands quite well, certainly better than my younger 25 ever was! It has a few marks so a valet is probably essential from my point of view but coupled with a movement service (it has no UK history) i need to budget about £400 on the purchase price. I have the w/e to decide whether i keep or return it.      Initial impressions on the bracelet are very good. Clearly heavier than a strap model and the weight is noticable by comparison. That said it's very comfortable, the deployant actually dead centres unlike my strap variants and as i was used to bracelet only watches before Panerai, it's like going back to familiar things. I like the package of the two tones of metal and the anthracite dial is sublime (like my 89 and others) If i keep it, i imagine i'll have to search out a 91 to join the 'grey dial set'. |

Looks stunning Baz - I've been tempted by a metal bracelet model I'll admit, and the twin steel/titanium is gorgeous...I'll have to wait post-SIHH to see how much dosh I've got left for 'investment'... Congratulations |

It was bought on the basis of needing a service and valet, the bezel though has some marks and RIS can't/wont re-brush a bezel, so it's a new one only. £3100 to buy it £275 for a movement service £180 for a bezel £95 for a valet £12 p+p to return it?????????????????? I'm really not sure. There is no COSC certificate either  simply missing or were they not submitted in those days (2001)

Sorry Baz - don't understand the question...the price you paid, or the overall price of getting what would be essentially a brand new 106? £3550 for a brand new 106 doesn't seem too bad to me. Quite frankly, while I'm probably more 'anal' than anyone when it comes to scratches, I'd probably forgoe the new bezel unless it was completely squashed out of shape - which isn't apparent in the photos. |

I know they can't be bought new obviously and i always buy for pleasure primarily but being cursed with a perfectionist nature, i usually overspend. Baz I have to ask you, what are you buying it for? If you're buying it to resell, then the missing COSC is 'possibly' (but only possibly) important - you can get the watch re-checked (at a price) and a new certificate if it's really that important to you. However, if you're buying for you - what possible difference can it make? Of course, in between the two extremes is a third possibility - you buy it for yourself, but in the event you don't really like it, you sell it. Like I said, the missing COSC is not a deal breaker for me - if the watch is genuine (and you have the other papers to prove it) I can't see a problem. But then you're you, and I'm me

Buying it purely for my pleasure but one day when i'm old(er) and sell it i don't want missing 'papers' to be an issue and hammer the value. According to 'risti', the 106 was £3350 new in 2001 so it was pretty expensive then, due to the bracelet option i imagine. Just number crunching, a PAM 25 in 2001 was £2400, Now it's £4000, an uplift of 67% Applying the same percentage the 106, if it were available now, it would be £5595 It makes £3700 seem like a bargain  How would i go about getting a replacement COSC?

I'm not sure - I seem to remember hearing it can be done, and Panerai would be the only ones who could organise this as the COSC don't accept 'personal' test requests. Knowing Panerai it would cost an arm and three legs...why not ring 'em up and ask them. Their phone number in the UK is 0044 207 312 6894 Just had confirmation from Panerai - they do it, but it can take 2 to 3 months...and it's not free! |

I've chatted at length with the UK sales and service people several times previously, to find an authentic friction close BDR for my 89. Finally they have found a NOS item from somewhere  A replacement COSC in itself is a formality. The cost however, unsurprisingly, is quoted as 'significant' The whole watch is returned to the factory and dismantled etc and the movement submitted. I suppose what ever way i look at this, it's not going to be the original certificate, that's gone. I don't think i want the additional cost and grief of seeking a replacement, so i either buy as it is, or return it. I can see a restless weekend looming. |

Well, even more confused now. A couple of guys on 'risti are suggesting i'm mad to reject it, just because the COSC is missing and that £3100 is a bargain not to be missed? They value a 106 at $6500 app or £4300 at todays exchange. If that's the case, then fully refurbished and like new, it would only owe me £3700 app. I always buy to keep but know to my cost in some cases missing papers have an affect on value. The problem is, i really want to keep it but not if it evolves into a lame duck deal! |

The problem with people on fora is they're really fantastically good at spending other peoples money. I can easily imagine the following scenario: XYZ - "Bloody Hell you're mad not to keep hold of it at that price - it's a steal" Baz - "Well OK, how about I sell it to you? D'you want it?" XYZ - "Oh no mate, can't say that model rocks my boat, sorry" Add to this the fact that it probably is a steal for some of these guys who've got far more money than sense (judging by some of the forum replies) You buy a watch or a camera or an outboard motor for you, not some other lame bugger trolling the fora because he's got no other interest in life. Do what you think is right - personally I'm not keen on that particular model, so I'm not a good judge, but I do think the price is OK and the fact that there's no COSC would make very little difference at the end of the day - but my opinion is worth as much or as little as the others... I'm not much help really, am I !! |

"I'm not much help really, am I !!" In a word no  I'm liking it more all the time. I'm thinking a movement service may be a waste of £'s also now, though the valet is a definite. It's running at a very respectable +3 since 0845 yesterday. That's better than my brand new 240! |

Post script. Finally sent the nice 106 back yesterday. I decided i would stand to my principles and not buy another 'expensive' watch that wasn't complete with all it's papers etc. Whilst i can live with it, i know from bitter experience selling it on can be a serious issue. The dealer wouldn't budge on the price either. I need to find another Pam to make me smile now
