Hi,

New here. Just got my first Panerai. A PAM0164.
Have got swirls on the polished bezel due to normal wearing. Not deep, just visible to the eye at certain angles.
Understand polishing shouldn't be something I should be doing frequently, but just want to know I can do it should I wish.

I've read some PAM enthusiasts wear by cape cod, but they seem to be divided whether it should be used on a brushed surface.
The 164 has a brushed case and polished bezel, so I'm worried about trying the cape cod on the bezel and ruining the case.

Should this be something I be worried about...ruining the brushed surfaces with cape cod?
Should I worry about damaging the crystal?
Any tips on how to go about this? Much appreciated thnx!

I'd be interested to hear a few tips on this too. My 111 is all polished so I don't have that concern, but I'd like to know if there are any tricks for avoiding polishing the crystal etc.

The way I understand it is that Cape Cod is a chemical rather than an abrasive process - as such, you won't have any real problems if the cloth comes into contact with the saphire - but obviously, avoid touching the brushed SS parts of the body. Gentle wiping of the area to be polished usually brings it back (as long as the sqcratches aren't too deep) - there's no advantage in rubbing it like a mad thing, but it does take time.

Why not simply cover the brushed parts with adhesive tape...?

i'd always assumed cape cod has some abrasive agent so it rubs up against the watch...i guess same difference if it's chemical but takes something off the watch. i'm all thumbs and got a generous C+ for my arts &craft class in grade school...haven't really improved in that dept. so i can't gather up enough courage to try the CC.

How can it be chemical?, yes the cloth goes black (esp on gold etc) but this is just oxidation, I'm sure its micro abrasive.

on the other hand, there are chemical cleaners like 'silver dip' for removing tarnish on silver etc but they cannot remove scratches

Thanks guys. I haven't put Cape Cod to Panerai yet, but when I do I'll keep it gentle and stay away from the crystal, just in case. (I had thought CCs were abrasive too, by the way, but I'm not sure)

Hey guys,

I decided to try anyway. Didn't want sticky masking tape on my case, so did it without taping it up.
I applied CC only to the polishing surface and worked it only on the bezel. Slowly, with pressure so i could feel some abrasive action but still soft on all accounts. Careful to only buff the bezel only. Some of the polishing oils definitely got onto the crystal and case, but no dramas once i washed the whole watch after i was done. Everything a-o-k.

Result? Looks a charm in normal lighting (ie outdoors, daylight), but under artificially lighted conditions, can still see some swirls on some angles. Definitely an improvement, but no miracle polish.

Cape cod does have an abrasive element as well.. if you rub a crystal with it enough it will remove the AR Coating.

Since this topic is about polishing a 164, would you please explain to me what a OOR 164 is?
