So my 112 is barely a week old and I've wound the watch for a few times (I do it every 2 days).

Already I am seeing a few fine and light "hairline" scratches on the polished bezel right beside the crown. I thought, is the skin on my thumb that tough or what? I know that I should learn to accept that the watch will earn a patina with constant use. Still, I want to avoid scratches in a specific area, knowing that winding the watch a gazillion times is inevitable.

Any thoughts? Anybody else with polished bezels and the same concern? Am I being too paranoid and O-C in thinking the watch will develop wind marks?

I was the same when I got my zero, I always try to wind it with the nail of my thumb in between the crown and bezel, it still gets marked though :x . I use the cape cod cloths to get these sort of marks out. Guess it's just something we have to live with.

The only way to avoid such marks, is to place a piece of masking tape or similar over the bezel, every time you wind it ;)

The adhesive of the tape wont leave marks on the bezel right? Will try this one out, thanks.

oh yeahhh the infamous winding scratches. These drove me crazy with my 114.

I just made a habit of giving my hands a good cleaning before winding.. best way to ensure this is to wind after taking my morning shower. Your hands will pick up minute pieces of dust and particles that can cause scratches, but if you give your hand a good scrub first, it reduces this.

I tried the masking tape and it works!

Will try the clean hands thing too in the next 2 days. :D

it's a watch, wear it and enjoy it, dont worry so much about hairline scratches.

Agreed, with wear and enjoy :) . There's nothing wrong with minimising wear and damage though 8-)

You are both correct. I figure I can do the masking tape most of the time, but there will be chances that I wont or can't i.e. when I'm out of town on vacation or business trip and masking tape is not available. It would be dorky to pack a roll of tape in my suitcase. :D
