As I understand it, straps can be installed on bracelet watches, but not the other way around. Someone correct me if this is inaccurate.

That is incorrect. Bracelets can be installed on most of the Regular Luminor watches, just not Radiomirs and 1950's watches movements. For example, you can install a Bracelet on the 000.

I believe it's quite costly to go this way though with regards to cost for bracelet and end links.

Well, I don't think its any more than you'd pay for the bracelet version of a watch. I can't remember how much those Panerai Bracelets run exactly, but the new ones are a bit cheaper.. I think they clock in around $1000USD or slightly above.

A current trend with many new watch releases, believe it or not, are the mesh-style metal bracelets. These can be had for $40 or so if you look around. Of course, fit feel and appearance is a personal thing, but they are comfortable.
