can someone in the know explain a bit about the sandwich and non-sandwich dials to me

personally I think the sandwich ones look nicest but what are the tech differences etc?

There are two basic principles here - the painted dials, where the luminous material is applied to the surface of the dial, and the 'sandwich' dials where the numbers and minute markers are cut out of the metal plate which forms the visible dial (behind the crystal). Behind this is a second metal plate with recessed areas where a thick luminous paste is applied - the areas corresponding to the cut-outs in the first metal plate - thus 'sandwiching' the luminous material between the two metal plates.

I personally think so - but I don't have a sufficiently accurate light-meter to test this!

This is a sandwich dial after approximately 10 seconds exposure to a halogen lamp...



I find I can read the dial perfectly easily even after several hours in the dark, provided I leave it to 'charge' up under my bedside lamp for a few minutes before going to sleep.

I always thought it was a top layer of metal with the numerals cut out (so far so good) with a plate of luminous material (plastic or something) sandwiched below it, with another plate of metal below that! Shows I really do know nothing about Pannies!

You are right - but I'm led to believe that there are in fact two methods of 'doing' the sandwich - from the photos I've seen there's a honking great slab of luminous material between two metal plates - but I've also seen the system I've described. I was simply trying to give an idea of how it works.

with the looks of the photo i would bluntly say that indeed it is more brilliant and luminous. but then again this is subjective
