This shot of a 219 shows the 'sandwich' dial fairly well.

Image

On the '12' marker one can see the shadow falling across and through the '1' onto the luminous area underneath.

And now? Is there a pic in the first post on this thread?

I can see it on 3 different machines - please let us know if it's visible or not.

The new PHPBB3 that i am using now allows images uploads to be stored on the server, unlike the older software used on BreitlingSource.. so you guys dont have to host your own photos anymore! I want to eventually do this for BS as well but.. might not happen for a bit.

That's brilliant news - what's the size limit per file?

Is there any reason for the sandwich dial? Like does it offer any advantages over painting the lume onto the dial?

It all goes back to the history of Panerai and why the watch is what it is. The original design is for a divers watch, and the Italian Navy who put out the tender asked for the ability to read the dial in total darkness - and this is the solution Panerai found. If you think about it, a disc of luminous material behind the dial is likely to have the ability to 'store' far more light than a simple painted character.

Panerai also developed a system of storing the luminous material in tiny glass tubes - being radio-active this needed no light to 'charge' it up - and these were used in their gun and torpedo sights. A bit like a self-replenishing traser tube....
