In itself, the question seems a bit daft - but having spent a lot of time on various watch fora, I've come to some conflicting conclusions and would like to see what you guys think. First of all a poll, then we'll get to discusing this in more detail.

Sporty, this is a tough question. Or maybe you have constructed it to be tough :D

Some watches are for daily wear, others for special occasions. Some to go with business attire, others to match the practicality of casual wear. Some to fight with you the harsh tasks being assigned to you, others share with you a lazy moment of leisure.

See it is endless :D but one thing I know for sure, I never get a watch just for the sake of display!

I'm glad to see you both reading between the lines...the question was prompted by a post on another forum a couple of days ago. In the post, the guy went to great lengths to show (with the aid of photographs) how to cover a Panerai in pieces of Scotch tape to prevent marks on the case when winding it up...

I nearly fell off my chair. Sorry guys, but this breaks down into the following basics for me:

1: you buy a watch to wear

2: you buy a watch to re-sell (at a profit)

Often, on other fora, I read questions like "Will the xxx be the next 'hot' watch". This implies that the person asking is either buying a watch because someone else says it's great, or whether they're buying it in the hope it becomes valuable to re-sell.

I can't come to terms with this, personally, as I have a nasty selfish tendency to buy things for ME. I want model 'X' or 'Y' because I like what it looks like, or a particular function that it proposes, but certainly not because some guy with more money than sense suggests it's his favourite. Obviously the manufacturers love to see all the different methods of making their products sell - it's called marketing - but I'm more interested in what makes people buy any given watch or model in the first place, hence this discussion.

I buy a lot of watches because I find them interesting. Price is often important to me when buying a watch I am not sure I am going to keep (or quite often it is one that i know i will not keep) simply because I want to experience the watch for a while and do a video review of it or whatever. Usually when I buy watches for this purpose I am hoping to buy it cheap and resell it without a loss.

In the end, however, I buy watches because I want to wear them. I wear all my watches, and if I don't, I eventually sell them. Or the sit in the safety deposit box until I get around to pulling them out ;)

Easy for me. I had to sell all my other watches so I could buy PAM so worn at work or when out with the girlfriend. Out on the town I don't wear a watch & all other times it's a Traser (Kid/Garden proof).

I still have a few lower cost watches. I had them all out on my desk last week. Later on that day my 3 year old son came into the bedroom trying to put my PAM on. Even at such a young age he's got expensive taste!

Easy question, in my case. I buy them to wear them.

Maybe I'm just saying because I haven't yet bought one expensive enough to put in a case.

I bought my watch to wear, not all the time but regularly, but with ione eye on the value so buying one pre owned I would hope not to lose much money on it in the long run. Win win in my eyes.

I purchase a great deal of watches since I discover them intriguing. Cost is regularly essential to me when purchasing a watch I don't know I am going to keep basically on the grounds that I need to encounter the watch for some time and complete a video audit of it or whatever.
