OK this is a real Panerai noob type of question , which is rather apt as I am a Panerai noob(!), but what are the little round indentations on the underside of the lugs on some Luminor and 1950's cases? I just noticed a couple of 212's for sale and one had these indentations, while one didn't. I also noticed they only appear on two of the four lugs. Is it correct that the same model may or may not have these? If so I guess it's due to a difference of age, but any info from you guys would be appreciated.

As to your question: about 2 years ago Panerai changed the strap mounting system (and other details) on the contemporary and manifattura models. There are also some minor changes on the base models, which included adding a small roller at the end of the crown lock.

The major 'innovation' was the change from a longitudinal screw with a larger hole in one lug, and a threaded part in the other, to a simple bar held in place by a spring button system. To remove the bar (and the strap?!) you have to press the button on the underside of the lug, and push the bar out. A new tool has been supplied (from the 'J' series) to do this. The bar has an indent at one end which coincides with the spring button and thus locks it in place.

As the 212 (you still want my 253 don't you!) is a current model, you will indeed see this modification to the more recent examples.

Hey Sporty! Yes it's been a while. I've been a bit busy lately over the way on BreitlingSource, so I've not ventured back here for a while. Speaking of which, we've not seen you over there for an age - have you sold your Breitlings now?

Thanks for the info on the lugs (and about the rollers on the crown lock - I'd noticed that on one picture I saw too).

Yeah your 253 is STILL a beautiful piece, but I've been getting into the "non-hobnail" dials too. I reckon I could be a Panerai owner shortly!

My pleasure. As to the Breitlings, no I've still got a few but somehow when you're drawn into the whirlwind of Panerai it's sometimes hard to get out!

I've been dropping hints with my AD about an invite to SIHH in Geneva but that's not going to be, at least not this year - sadly I'm going to have to wait and see like everyone else , but the little I've heard does suggest that 2009 is going to be 'interesting' to say the least.

I'll try to find time to drop in and see you over on B-Source sometime soon.

Just while we're talking about the new strap attachment method - is the general concensus that it's better than the screwed pins, or worse, or not really much in it?

I guess there's less concern in terms of stripping the thread on case, but I know that a lot of Panerai fans are sticklers for tradition!

The new system is far better, in my opinion. No more stripped threads, no more screw driver scratches on the lugs etc. Sadly there will always be someone who insists on living in the middle ages, so there'll always be criticisms, but this really is a move in the right direction.
